Following a week of applications and interviews, the Caddo Parish School Board has voted to name Shalanda Swift-Watkins at the interim board member for District 11. She'll hold the position until the October 24 primary election.

The vacancy was created when member Kacee Kirschvink resigned May 19 to take a job in Baton Rouge.

"Mrs. Swift-Watkins is a worthy candidate for the position on the Caddo Parish School Board, and will serve as an exceptional representative for District 11," said Board President Steve Riall in a news release. "We continue to wish Mrs. Kirschvink all the best as she begins a wonderful career in Baton Rouge, and know that she has left District 11 in capable hands."

Swift-Watkins is said to be a frequent volunteer, and has a fifth-grader in Caddo Schools. She said she's excited to work along with current board members to benefit children and teachers.

"I want to be a positive force in our community," she said. "I have a heart for our teachers and staff and am frequently in our schools to be a helping hand, not for any attention, but to make a difference. Together as a board, we can come together to better the education of our children."

Swift-Watkins' first meeting as a board member will be the group's June 2 work session.
