The Shreveport Fire Department is finishing up an 80-hour urban search and rescue course designed to ensure that residents are protected in case of a natural or man-made catastrophe. Twenty-one SFD personnel participated in the training, which consists of emergency building shoring, concrete breaching and breaking, lifting and moving debris, and search operations. Normally, the course is taught by outside contractors and costs between $60,000 and $90,000, but THIS class is being provided solely by SFD personnel, which means substantial savings for Shreveport citizens. The final day of exercise is later this morning at the Shreveport Fire Training Academy on Greenwood Road.
