It's time to fall back! While you're setting the clocks for an hour earlier, remember to check your smoke alarm batteries, too.

Local firefighters always recommend residents change the batteries in their smoke alarms at least twice a year, when Daylight Saving Time starts, and when it ends. They say this is a good way to help ensure your battery-operated alarms have adequate power all year round.

Here are some other recommendations from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • Install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement.
  • Replace all smoke alarms, including alarms that use 10-year batteries and hard-wired alarms, when they are 10 years old or sooner if they do not respond properly.
  • Test all smoke alarms at least once a month by using the test button.

You'll need to set your clock back by 2 a.m. Sunday, November 2, 2014.
