It's a big weekend for local activities and events. One of those is the area's largest Higher Education Open House. Whether you're graduating soon, looking to further your education or planning a new career, this open house will help you chart your course for career success. Colleges and universities from our region will all be onhand, along with People's State Bank. The event is free and open to the public...and runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Clarion Hotel on E. 70th in Shreveport.

The Shreveport Fire Eepartment's first Smoke Alarm Campaign of 2012 is also set for this weekend. Fire officials say the smoke alarm give-away and maintenance drive will be held Saturday. Representatives from various SFD divisions, along with their community partners, will gather at Emmanuel Christian Ministries at 8:30 that morning to get a run-down on the department's goal to install 150 10-year smoke alarms. This is one of three planned smoke alarm campaigns for this year targeting high-risk Shreveport neighborhoods. But residents can also get a free smoke alarm, or get their current ones serviced, just by contacting the SFD's Fire Prevention Division.)

Did you know you can now check out a laptop computer...at the library? You can! Shreve Memorial Library's Cedar Grove-Line Avenue branch is unveiling laptops for check-out during an open house celebration Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The laptops are internet-ready, so you can use them at any Wi-Fi hotspot, including all shreve memorial branches. They're provided by the Federal Broadband Technology Opportunities Program grant. And if you're still wondering how to download e-books, movies and music to your iPad, iPod, Android or Smart Phone...library staff will show you how during the open house. Plus, there will be plenty of children's activities, refreshments and programs to enjoy.

Duck Pond clean-up will also take place Saturday.  We'll be bringing you details on that very soon!
