The River City Repertory Theatre is opening their newest production at East Bank Theatre on May 25, and it's guaranteed to make anyone who loves theatre bust a gut laughing.

The show, "It's Only A Play" is written by Terrence McNally, and directed by longtime Shreveport directors Patrick McWilliams and Robert Busieck.

River City Rep's website gives us a synopsis of this, what the New York Times calls, "side splittingly funny" show.

It’s the opening night of “The Golden Egg” on Broadway, and the wealthy producer Julia Budder is throwing a lavish party in her uber wealthy Manhattan townhouse. Downstairs the celebrities are pouring in, but the real action is upstairs in the bedroom where the cast and a number of their friends have staked themselves out to await the reviews.

The group includes the excitable playwright, the possibly unstable wunderkind director, the pill popping leading lady attempting a “comeback,” and the playwright’s best friend for whom the play was written but who passed it up to do a television series.

Add to this a drama critic who has panned the playwright in the past and a new-in-town naïve singer and you have a prime recipe for hilarious narcissism, childishness and overwrought emotions.

"It's Only A Play" stars Patrick McWilliams, Anne Lockhart, Blayne Weaver, Ryan Williams, Heather Bryson, and Aiden Polling.
