Red River United teacher's union will participate in a national Walk-In for Public Education later this week.

RRU President Jackie Lansdale says teachers, staff, students, parents and community members are invited to celebrate public education in Caddo Parish.

Things get started Thursday, October 6, at 7:20 a.m. at Keithville Elementary/Middle School, a K-8 neighborhood school with a bio-med magnet component.

The next celebration starts at 8:15 a.m. at South Highlands Elementary, a nationally-ranked magnet elementary school.

The final celebration will be at 8:45 a.m. at Fair Park High, a neighborhood school recognized by the state as a top performer in school performance score growth and improved graduation rates.

Lansdale said this is all in recognition of public education, and the fact that it is a right for all children.

"It is the promise to boys and girls all over our nation, the opportunity to have a bus pick you up every day and transport you safely to school, to have a teacher waiting for you behind closed doors, and to have a nutritional lunch, and to transport you back home safely every day," Lansdale said. "That's called the promise of public education."

Lansdale said the union purposely chose K-8 schools this year. Teachers and staff will have signs up and t-shirts on to show support for public education.
