As Hurricane Irene heads for the east coast, a couple of local residents are heading there, too. Two volunteers from the Northwest Louisiana Chapter of the American Red cross hit the road this morning in the chapter’s Emergency Response Vehicle. Rachel Byrd of Shreveport and Lonzo Sheffield of Bossier City are headed for a staging area in North Carolina — to be ready, just in case. They’ve got the ERV stocked with supplies so they can use it to reach affected areas and provide whatever supplies and services might be needed. The local Red Cross chapter says other volunteers from this area could be sent, if their help is needed. The local chapter is also monitoring the aftermath of yesterday’s Virginia earthquake.
