It's the showbiz story the world is talking about today. A-list actress Angelina Jolie says she's had a preventative double mastectomy.

The actress revealed in an op-ed in the New York Times that she had the mastectomy after learning she carried a gene that makes it extremely likely she'll get breast cancer. In the article, Jolie talked about her future with her children.

"We often speak of 'Mommy’s mommy' and I find myself trying to explain the illness that took her away from us," said Jolie. "They have asked if the same could happen to me. I have always told them not to worry, but the truth is I carry a 'faulty' gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer."

The 37-year-old Jolie said she made the choice after her mother died of breast cancer at age 56. She revealed that her husband Brad Pitt was by her side during the entire procedure.
