Nine new members were inducted into Northwestern State University’s chapter of the Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars.  An induction ceremony was held on Wednesday, April 18 on the second floor Reading Room at Watson Library.  Members of Phi Beta Delta include faculty, staff and students who are selected based on their international orientation, scholarship accomplishment and/or contribution to international exchange.

Newly inducted faculty include Jim Crawford, Christine Ferrell, Pamela Francis and Charlene LeBrun of the Department of Language and Communication.  Newly inducted student members are Susan Barden of Plano, Texas, and Kyle May of Baton Rouge, Louisiana Scholars’ College; Dana Hart of Baton Rouge, Theatre and Dance; Tom Lawler of Baton Rouge, Social Sciences, and Mario Torres of Natchitoches, Music and School of Business.

Crawford, professor of Spanish, was guest speaker and addressed current issues in Latin America and the possibility of Latin America as a destination for student travel. A native of Venezuela, Crawford has travelled extensively in South America and often takes students on trips abroad.

Phi Beta Delta is the first honor society in the United States to recognize scholarship achievement in international education.  It wasestablished in 1987 and now has over 170 chapters at universities throughout the Unites States and around the world.  Its goals are to increase the recognition, credibility and importance of the international experience and create a catalyst for international academic-based programming on college campuses while providing support and recognition to those individuals on campuses who are involved in international endeavors.

The Northwestern State chapter received its charter in 2010 with the induction of 25 faculty, staff and student members.

This academic year, Phi Beta Delta sponsored a Student Study Abroad Panel and Reconciling Narratives Through Communication, an open conversation about Israel/Palestine. The group also sponsored a no-host dinner for members and friends.
