MONROE, La. (AP) — The Ouachita Parish Police Jury has shot down the proposed ordinance requiring mandatory garbage service for owners of every occupied residential rental unit in the unincorporated areas of Ouachita Parish.

The News-Star reports Juror Pat Moore first proposed the mandatory garbage service in November. However, after objections and concerns were raised by the public, the Police Jury delayed acting on the matter in order to tweak the ordinance.

Monday's vote was 4-2.

Besides eliminating jail time, the ordinance was revised to only require owners of residential rental units to have a garbage contract in place for their building.

Several other landlords said they would have to pass the cost on to their tenants.
