[UPDATE]  One-year-old Alana Ealy's condition is improving following last week's wreck on Greenwood Road.  She's been upgraded to "fair."  She and her mother Melvina, who suffered a broken leg in the accident, continue to recover at LSU Health Shreveport.

Meantime, Corporal Marcus Hines tells KEEL News that investigators are awaiting toxicology tests and other information before anyone can be charged in the accident.  If charges are filed, they'll likely be for negligent injury or reckless operation.

[ORIGINAL STORY]  A young child was seriously injured in a crash involving two alleged drag racers. Shreveport police say a Chevy Caprice and a Chevy pick-up truck hit each other head-on in the 4600 block of Greenwood Road.

The pick-up driver -- 62-year-old Johnny Allen -- and the Caprice driver -- 31-year-old Myron Thomas -- each suffered minor injuries. Thomas' passengers, 29-year-old Melvina Ealy and her one-year-old child, were both taken to an area hospital. The infant, who was not in a child safety seat, is said to have suffered life-threatening injuries. Melvina broke her leg in the crash.

Witnesses have told investigators they saw what appeared to be a drag race between Thomas and the driver of an orange four-door vehicle, thought to be a Chevy Impala. The driver of that vehicle is identified as 52-year-old Calvin Beaner, Sr., of Greenwood. Allen happened to be headed eastbound on Greenwood Road while the race was going on.

Crash investigators are still working to figure out what led up to the accident, and charges could be filed. Toxicology test results are pending.
