The Cities of Shreveport and Bossier City have joined a national movement that started in 2009 with 23 declaring cities.

This year, 500 cities are expected to declare November 1 "Extra Mile Day." Mayor Cedric Glover has made that declaration for Shreveport, and so has Mayor Lo Walker for Bossier City.

The day recognizes "the capacity we each have to create positive change in ourselves, families, organizations and communities" when we "go the extra mile." It celebrates people and organizations that have chosen to create positive change in their communities.

"It's easy to complain about everything we see going on around us," says Extra Mile Day Founder Shawn Anderson in a news release. "The 'go the extra mile' message, though, gives people an alternative to just throwing their arms in the air and saying 'I give up.' Extra Mile Day is a small reminder of the power we each have to create positive change at any time on any day."

Anderson started the Extra Mile Day movement when he made a 4,000-mile solo bike ride across the U.S. Keep in mind, he's a non-bicyclist. During his ride, he interviewed 200 people identified as "going the extra mile" by either accomplishing something unique or overcoming a major tragedy.
