Flood prevention efforts move into high gear in south Louisiana.
The Louisiana National Guard is building an emergency protective barrier around Avoca Island as Mississippi River levels continue to rise. Avoca Island is just east of Morgan City in St. Mary Parish.

In the meantime, National Guard troops have been building protective levees near Krotz Springs in St. Landry Parish.

The Morganza Spillway could soon be opened to divert some of the floodwaters into the Atchafalaya Basin.
