Shreveport Fire Chief Craig Mulford was fired today after an internal investigation revealed he violated administrative policies during his handling of complaints lodged against several firefighters under his command.

Assistant Chief James Thomas Carpenter also was terminated today after the investigation found that he also violated internal policies. Deputy Chief Ronald Jones, currently the department’s highest ranking officer, made that decision.

Mayor Cedric Glover announced the terminations after thoroughly evaluating the internal report he received on September 5 from the Internal Affairs Division of the Shreveport Police Department.

Mulford was indicted in June on five counts of malfeasance in office. He is currently out on bond, pending the outcome of his court case. Today’s action by Mayor Glover is based on internal policy and is separate from the criminal case.

Carpenter, who started with the department on July 1, 1974,was indicted in June and charged with perjury in connection with the grand jury investigation of theShreveport Fire Department administration’s handling of alleged misconduct by firefighters at Station 8. His termination, like Mulford’s, is separate from the criminal charge.

A Shreveport firefighter since July 21, 1982, Mulford rose to the rank of Captain before Mayor Glover promoted him to the top job on July 4, 2011.

Both Mulford and Carpenter had been on paid administrative leave since late June. Their terminations are effective immediately.
