Man Wanted for Armed Robbery in Shreveport Captured After Vehicle Chase, Shooting

A Spring, Texas, man led law enforcement officers from three different agencies on a pursuit that ended in gunfire early this morning.

It started shortly after 10:00 last night, when Shreveport patrol officers were called to the 9500 block of Ellerbe Road to a report that a woman had been robbed at gunpoint.

The woman told police she had just pulled into the parking lot of a business at the intersection of Ellerbe Road and Flournoy-Lucas, when she was approached by a man who attempted to engage in conversation with her. Then he pulled a handgun and demanded her valuables. She struggled with the suspect over the gun, but he overpowered her and ran off with her purse. He got into a dark-colored pick-up truck and shot out the woman's car tire so she couldn't drive off. The woman wasn't hurt.

About an hour-and-a-half later, the victim's stolen credit card was used at a business in DeSoto Parish. Sheriff's deputies were alerted to a suspicious vehicle at a well site on Hwy. 510 east of Mansfield, and confronted the man, Terry Leroy Smith. He led deputies on a vehicle chase, which entered the city limits of Shreveport. Shreveport police assisted in the pursuit, which ended early this morning near the 5600 block of North Market Street.

Smith abandoned the pick-up truck and ran, and was chased down by a K-9. Smith fell down in the grass, but when he rolled over and sat up, he pointed a gun at deputies and officers. Two deputies, one from Caddo and one from DeSoto fired at Smith, who was hit in the foot and leg. He was taken to University Health with non-life-threatening wounds.

Smith is being investigated for the overnight armed robbery in Shreveport and another in Bossier City. Bossier police say in that crime, a man and woman were sitting in a vehicle on the second level of the Boomtown Casino parking garage, when the suspect robbed them of an undisclosed amount of money. The victims weren't injured.
