A man is dead and a police officer injured after an early-morning traffic stop and short pursuit on I-20. Just before 4 this morning, a Shreveport officer tried to stop a vehicle near the intersection of Cotton and Common downtown, but the driver wouldn't stop. During a brief chase, the man driving a tan-colored 2000 Lincoln Town Car sped onto I-20 just west of the Linwood Avenue exit ramp. That's when the driver lost control and hit a concrete barrier alongside the interstate.

When the officer approached, the man tried to take off again, and almost ran over one of his passengers, who had jumped out of the vehicle when it hit the barrier. One officer fired several shots, which hit the driver. He was pronounced dead at LSU Hospital a short time later. One officer was treated for minor injuries.

No names are being released right now. Police were still checking things out around 8:30 this morning.  The injured officer is on paid leave while that investigation continues.
