LSU Shreveport Associate Professor Gary Joiner has been named the chairman of the Civil War Sesquicentennial Task Force by Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne. Joiner was also named to the Louisiana Bicentennial Commission by Gov. Bobby Jindal.

As chairman of the Civil War Sesquicentennial Task Force, Joiner is responsible for developing programs commemorating Louisiana’s role in the Civil War. As the 150th anniversary of the Civil War approaches, Joiner will volunteer on the Task Force that aims to commemorate not only the state's part in the nation's bloodiest war, but also the nation in the years after the war.

The Louisiana Bicentennial Commission was created to mark the 200th anniversary of Louisiana’s attainment of statehood. Gov. Jindal appointed Joiner to the Commission to create the observance of the War of 1812 and the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. Commemoration events begin September 2011.

Joiner holds the Mary Anne & Leonard Selber Endowed Professorship in Liberal Arts at LSUS.
