The greatest basketball player in LSU history, Pete Maravich passed away 27 years ago today. 'Pistol Pete' died of a heart attack on January 8th, 1988 at the age of 40.

Maravich, a three time All American, remains the all-time leading NCAA Division I scorer with 3,667 career points (in only three varsity seasons) with an average of 44.2 points per game. And as historians like to point out, this was done before the advent of the three point line.

Later, in the NBA, he scored 50 or more points six times and 40 or more points thirty-five times in regular season games. He led the pros in scoring in 1977 and was a five time NBA all-star. Despite an injury plagued pro career that ended in 1980, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987.

'Pistol Pete' died of a heart attack while playing a pick-up game with friends at a church gym in California.
