Despite the thousands of Air Force families who have retired to the Shreveport - Bossier City area after their days at Barksdale, Louisiana is not on a recent list of Best States for Military Retirees from the personal finance website, wallethub.

It's a little known fact that the average military officer retires at the age of 47. In determining the best - and worst - states for military retirees, wallethub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 20 key metrics, ranging from job opportunities for veterans to number of VA health facilities per number of veterans.
