A sad story we reported yesterday now has a happy and heartwarming end. It started with the theft of 10 bicycles the Alexandria Salvation Army had collected to give to poor kids in the area. Salvation Army Major LeeAnn Nelson has told the Alexandria Town Talk that "an incredible Christmas miracle" has happened...when Alexandria residents heard about the stolen bikes, they gave the agency about 130 bikes and more than $10,000. The donations came from businesses, families, city employees -- and even Rapides Parish Jail inmates. The Salvation Army originally had 30 bikes and hundreds of bags of toys for more than 200 Rapides Parish families when the thieves broke a window and stole some of the bikes. Because of our great Louisiana residents, the agency was able to hand out the donated bikes yesterday.
