Northwestern State University’s Nesom Natatorium will offer the American Red Cross GuardStart program, which is designed for youth 11 years old, or who have completed the 5th grade, through 14 years old. Registration is now being accepted for GuardStart.

Participants must be able to demonstrate the following skills:

• Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side • Tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs • Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet underwater

This program is designed to give youth a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills for future lifeguards, but does not give participants certification in First Aid, CPR or AED as a lifeguard. The program involves a significant amount of physical activity and touches on prevention, fitness, response, leadership and professionalism.

GuardStart will begin July 11 and will run Monday-Thursday for two weeks through July 21. Classes will be from 1-3 p.m. Registration is $60 and is limited to the first 10 participants. Other courses will be scheduled if interest requires. ARC Lifeguard Instructors Katie Yandell will teach the class.

To register, e-mail cindyd@nsula.edu (preferred) or call Davis at (318) 357-4140.
