Governor John Bel Edwards has signed into law a bill banning dismemberment abortions in Louisiana.

The bill was authored by State Rep. Mike Johnson, a Republican from Bossier City.

Louisiana becomes the latest state to outlaw the brutal procedure in which an unborn child has its limbs ripped off and skull crushed by forceps or clamps.

The bill's official title, the Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Act, passed the state senate last month by a vote of 35 to 2. Governor Edwards had promised to sign the bill when it came to his desk.
