HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Jay Paterno, the son of the late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, has dropped out of the race for Pennsylvania lieutenant governor.

Paterno says trying to overcome challenges to his nomination petition would be a long process that would distract from the campaign.

He was one of six Democratic candidates vying become the running mate of the Democratic gubernatorial nominee. Both races will be decided in the May 20 primary.

Paterno was an assistant coach under his father through 2011. He has been working on a book and runs a nonprofit aimed at eradicating malaria in Africa. He has been active in Democratic Party politics, campaigning for President Barack Obama.

Gov. Tom Corbett is seeking a second term and has a longshot challenger in the Republican primary.
