DeSoto Parish school officials don't have any numbers yet, but they expect to have to scale back their 2012-13 budget from current spending levels because drilling in the Haynesville Shale is slowing down. Schools Superintendent Walter Lee says the parish was prepared for this money to go away, but it's too early to guage an exact dollar amount. He says that will be determined on a month-by-month basis. He says no school programs are expected to be affected, but what COULD be are amounts of bonuses paid and money spent on one-time expenditures like construction. He says there may also be a slight reduction in teaching staff. However, he says the cuts should NOT be felt in the classroom. Oil and gas companies began announcing cutbacks earlier this year.
