Top 5 Tips for a Healthier Holiday

Thinkstock

Between all the pies, cookies, Christmas hams and latkes – it is easy to gorge on food during the holiday season. But you shouldn’t let the holiday season be a time to overindulge. Here are some tips so you can have a healthier holiday season.

1

Eat Fruits and Veggies

While you might think apple pie or your Aunt Lulu's fruit cake actually counts towards your daily recommended amount of fruits and vegetables it does not. Remember when you are piling food on your plate to include some of the green stuff. Canned vegetables are just as good as fresh, so go ahead and cook with canned peaches or frozen green beans if you like.

2

Don't Stuff Yourself!

It is easy to consume 12,000 calories during Christmas dinner. Eating too much means more pounds on the waistline, heartburn and indigestion. So eat in moderation. Take 20-minute breaks between second – or third – helpings to make sure you truly are still hungry.

3

Get Up!

It might be cold out but you still need some fresh air and exercise. Maybe during half-time during the game, take a quick walk to aid in the digestion of your food.

4

Lay Off the Booze

We all have that uncle who had a few too many and turns Christmas dinner into a night of revelations. For his sake and the rest of the family, lock up the liquor cabinet. Alcohol is filled with calories and does a number on your digestive system.

5

Be Cool

Trying to feed a bunch of people can be stressful. But try to keep calm for your body's sake. A recent study found the number of heart attacks spike during the holiday season.
