If you're into running, you're going to love SPAR's (Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation/City of Shreveport) 2014 Summer Fun Run Series with the Red River Road Runners! The events kick off this week and roll through the end of July from different locations so you don't get bored! Other events presented by SPAR coming up include the Free Fridays Forever concert series, the 5K run in partnership with Special Olympics and Movies and Moonbeams at Riverview Park.

Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation (SPAR/City of Shreveport) announces the following upcoming events:

  • Join SPAR and the Red River Road Runners for the first run of the 2014 Summer Fun Run series at 6:45 on Thursday, June 5.  The first run is a 5k starting at the Stoner Avenue Boat Launch.  Runs are every Thursday at various locations through Shreveport.  The cost is $4 per run for Red River Road Runner members and $5 per run for non-members.  This is the 24th consecutive year of the Fun Run series.  The runs begin promptly at 6:45 PM and are open to all runners (from those looking for a hard workout to those just wanting an enjoyable jog or stroll).  A time clock will be set up at each run.  The final run of the season will include a picnic and awards ceremony.  For more information, contact SPAR Event Services at 318-673-5100.  The 2014 Summer Fun Run schedule is:

  • On Friday, June 6th, from 5 PM to 8 PM in the Red River Entertainment (450 Clyde Fant), come join us under the Texas Street Bridge for live music featuring Pocket Change.  The live music is part of the Free Fridays Forever concert series sponsored by SPAR.  For more information, contact SPAR Event Services at 318-673-5100.
  • Then, head to Riverview Park for Movie & Moonbeams showing of “Turbo” beginning at 8:30 PM on Friday, June 6th.  The movie is PG.  The public is encouraged to bring chairs and blankets to view the film.  Admission is free.  Movies & Moonbeams is a presentation of the City of Shreveport and features films presented in an outdoor setting on a large screen that utilizes digital technology to provide theater-quality picture and sound.
  • On Saturday, June 7th at 8:30 AM, SPAR Therapeutic Recreation, in partnership with Northwest LA Special Olympics, is hosting a 5K and 1 mile health walk, run or roll.  Registration is from 7:30 AM to 8 AM with the race starting at 8:30 AM.  The event will be at Stoner Boat Launch off Clyde Fant Parkway in Shreveport.  The purpose of the event is to increase awareness of programs and organizations that provide activities for individuals with disabilities.  The event is free to the public.  For additional information, contact Theresa Gray-Jacobs at 318-673-7873.
