A former Thibodaux High School teacher has been sentenced to a year of probation after pleading guilty to two misdemeanor counts of prohibited sexual contact between an educator and a student.

25-year-old Celeste Bergeron of Thibodaux was accused of having sex with a student who was 17-years-old at the time. She will not be required to register as a sex offender since she pleaded guilty to misdemeanors.

WGNO in New Orleans reports the student involved was also a female student.

“All I heard, was that the student was also a girl, the 17-year-old,” said an unidentified student at the school. “I know now not to get close to teachers that much and just stay your distance from them.”

A sheriff spokesperson says an investigation was launched after kids in school alerted officials of the alleged inappropriate student-teacher affair.

Superintendent Jo Ann Matthews released a statement:

This type of behavior is not to be tolerated by any personnel in Lafourche Parish School District and will be dealt with swiftly.

Detectives uncovered alleged private social media messages.

Plus, evidence Bergeron and the student unlawfully made physical contact twice. Once at each other’s homes.

The sheriff’s office says one sexual encounter happened before Christmas. The other, this past week.
