Former President Jimmy Carter says he has cancer that has spread, although the former Chief Executive did not specify what kind of cancer he has.

Carter, 90, did have surgery Monday for a tumor on his liver.

Said Carter in a statement:

"Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body. I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare. A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week."

Carter was 39th president of the United States, in office from 1977 to 1981. Since leaving office, he's remained active working with groups such as Habitat for Humanity and founding the nonprofit Carter Center in his home state of Georgia.
