Flashback Friday: First Ever BCS National Championship Game

On this day in sports history 20 years ago we saw the very first BCS National Championship Game which pitted #1 Tennessee against #2 Florida State in the 28th Fiesta Bowl. What a game it was.

The Volunteers came into this game undefeated at 12-0 while the Seminoles of Florida State were 11-1. Florida State was favored in this game by 5.5 points.

The game opened up with both teams feeling each other out and the game played to a standstill after the first quarter.

As we got into the second quarter Tennessee would break the ice for the game's first score when quarterback Tee Martin connected with Shawn Bryson on a four-yard touchdown pass. That gave the Vols a 7-0 lead.

From there it was more from the Vols as linebacker Dwayne Goodrich picked off a Marcus Outzen pass and took it 54 yards to the house for a 14-0 lead.

Florida State would grab the final two scores of the first-half when William McGray ran in a one-yard score and kicker Sebastian Janikowski knocked home a field goal to cut the lead down to 14-9 Tennessee.

The third quarter went scoreless for both teams but then in the fourth quarter with just over nine minutes remaining the dagger was delivered by the Volunteers.....

Tee Martin hooked up with offensive MVP, wide receiver Peerless Price for a 79-yard touchdown that gave them a 20-9 lead that the Seminoles wouldn't be able to recover from. The Vols would hold on to win 23-16 and capture the first-ever BCS National Championship.
