Fired Texas trooper Brian Encinia, who pulled over and handcuffed black motorist Sandra Bland during a traffic stop last summer pleads not guilty to perjury charges. Bland died from hanging inside a jail cell.

Outside the courtroom, activists gathered to show support for Bland and condemn the alleged circumstances of her death. Bland's mother, Geneva Reed-Veal made the trip to Texas to witness the plea and the demonstrations, firsthand.

"To come all this way, I needed to do that. And the best part of this trip was going to the the memorial because people are still yet respecting the fact that she died and it wasn't in vain."

Bland's family has filed a wrongful death suit against the Texas Rangers.

Encinia was fired shortly after the encounter and after Bland was found hanged in her jail cell.
