The Environmental Protection Agency has announced the next steps in its Congressionally-mandated hydraulic fracturing study. The EPA has identified seven case studies to help with the assessment of potential impacts on drinking water sources caused by fracking. And two of those case study sites are the Haynesville shale play here in northwest Louisiana and the Barnett shale play in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. In the Haynesville, the EPA plans to monitor the hydraulic fracturing process before construction and throughout the drilling process. In the more established Barnett, the EPA will assess existing sites for possible drinking water contamination and attempt to determine possible pathways for contamination to reach water resources.
