If you have a medical emergency, and you have to be transported to a Shreveport hospital by a Shreveport Fire Department medic unit, that trip could easily cost $1000 or more. Shreveport Fire Chief Bryan Crawford says the fire department will bill Medicare, Medicaid, or whoever provides your private medical insurance. But there could still be out-of-pocket expenses. That's where the department's E-M-S Life Care program comes into play. Chief Crawford says it only costs 35-dollars-a-year to belong to E-M-S Life Care -- but your membership covers all out-of-pocket expenses -- for every member of your family. Last year, more than four-thousand Shreveport residents paid that fee and joined E-M-S Life Care.
