Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington says a Benton man was arrested Thursday night after a domestic abuse case turned into an arrest on charges of possession of explosives.

James R. McDearmont was charged with domestic abuse aggravated assault, unlawful storage of explosives, reckless use of explosives and two counts of illegal possession of stolen things.

Sheriff's deputies were investigating charges by McDearmont’s wife who said her husband was abusive, claiming he had assaulted her with a loaded weapon.  She also told investigators that McDearmont had multiple explosives on their property.

McDearmont was later detained on a traffic stop, where officers found him to have detonation cord in his pocket.  Upon execution of a search warrant at the residence, detectives discovered numerous explosives and explosive materials/components that were unlawfully stored in and outside the home.

The 55 year old McDearmont admitted to taking the explosives from his employers.

He was transported to the Bossier Maximum Security Facility for booking. His bond is pending.
