Over the weekend 50 dogs took part in the seventh annual Loews’ Surf Dog competition. We’ve known dogs love to surf ever since the days of Spuds Mackenzie, but to see that many canines getting together to “hang ten” was quite a sight.

How the competition worked was that the dogs each got 10 minute heats and were judged on their two best waves. Since it would be difficult for a dog to paddle out into the surf itself, their owners were allowed to help them on that front.

Abbie Girl, an Australian Kelpie, took first place in the small dog heat, and a Golden Retriever named Ricochet was the victor among the larger dogs.

But, really, when dogs surf, we are all winners. That’s because the profits from the event go to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and because we get to look at all sorts of adorable of photos of dogs taking to the waves.
