DALLAS (AP) — Police say officers have shot and killed a 33-year-old man who was firing a gun as he walked down a Dallas street and later pointed it at neighbors.

Maj. Jeff Cotner said Friday that Rodney Hodge was fatally shot by three officers called to a residential neighborhood Thursday night. He says Hodge was shot when he approached the officers and did not heed orders to drop his weapon. The officers have been placed on administrative leave as the investigation into the confrontation continues.

Cotner says the officers saw Hodge point his gun at people standing near their homes.

Police had attempted to speak with Hodge for about an hour to convince him to drop the gun.
