Gun safety, especially when kids are around, is top of mine this week after a 23 year old woman was shot by her son. According to police, a 2 year old found his mother's gun and was playing with it when it accidentally went off. Shreveport Police and the Caddo Sheriff's Office say it is crucial to keep firearms secure and to teach kids proper gun safety.

In fact, if you own guns or plan on buying your child a gun for Christmas, the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office will be hosting a free gun safety course for kids. The "First Gun Course" will teach kids ages 8-12 basic gun safety and how to properly handle a firearm.

“Children who will receive a gun for Christmas can try it for the first time in a safe environment with the help of a trained Caddo sheriff’s deputy,” Sheriff Steve Prator said.  "I would strongly urge [parents] to register their child for this program. It’s the responsible thing to do.”

The 4 hour class is free of charge and some ammunition (bb gun and .22) and targets will be provided for those in attendance. Due to limited space, pre-registration is required and Caddo residents will be given preference. An adult must remain with the child throughout the course. To register, call 681-0735.
