The fight against confederate monuments has been a hot topic across our country in the past year. The Ark-La-Tex is no stranger to the controversy. As you may recall there were calls for the Confederate monument outside of the Caddo Parish Courthouse to be removed.

In October 2017, the Caddo Parish Commission voted to remove the monument.  A legal battle began when the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) who claim to own the land where the monuments stands wanted to stop the removal.

On Friday, January 26th, the US District Court for the Western District of Louisiana denied the motion made by the UDC to stop the removal of the Confederate monument.

In his ruling, US District Court Judge Robert G. James included the following:

"The UDC faces the uphill battle of trying to prove that the words of 1903 minutes are sufficient to establish its ownership of that plot as a matter of law. Based on the evidence presented, the Court concludes that UDC has failed to meet that burden, or to show that it is entitled to relief otherwise”

Donna Frazier the Parish Attorney responded to Friday's ruling with the following.

"The Parish is pleased that the Court accepted our arguments that the UDC does not own the land under the monument. The Parish is prepared for the next phase of litigation."
