It's hurricane season once again, and the fact that there hasn't been a major Gulf Coast hurricane in more than a decade is all the more reason for residents of that region to be ready.

A new and innovative way that state and local governments are considering comes from the Far East, where nations including Japan and Thailand stay at the ready for deadly tidal waves known as tsunamis.

In those countries, more and more "survival pods" are being made available to coastal inhabitants. The pods, which can be built to hold up to 10 people, mean survival for those trapped in a tsunami -or hurricane -when emergency evacuation isn't possible.
