How do I maintain the treatment system after installation?

The Aerobic Treatment Unit (ATU) is very easy to operate and maintain. It was designed to be as simple as possible, without hidden expense. Please be aware of the following:

  • Aerator Operation – Check the air pump to insure it is operating. Once you’re accustomed to the soft humming sound of a properly operating unit, any unusual noise is an indication of a malfunction. If noise is detected or if the alarm signals, check the power source and  call McGrew Wastewater for service.
  • Water Discharge – Check water discharge monthly. If water discharge is black or murky, call McGrew Wastewater for service.
  • Aerator Filter – Check the inlet filter on the air pump every six months. Change or wash if necessary. The filter should be cleaned or changed more often if conditions warrant.

How does the system operate?

Once installed, the aerator will run twenty-four (24) hours a day, so the systems will operate with a minimal amount of attention. It will take 4 to 16 weeks, after startup, to develop an optimum amount of micro-organisms. To ensure proper operation and minimize maintenance requirements, the following material should not enter the system:

  • Strong disinfectants or bleaches (other than small amounts normally used in laundry – be conservative).
  • Oils, greases, and chemical wastes.
  • Disposable diapers, tampons, sanitary napkins, cigarette butts, latex / rubber products, and similar items.
  • Discharge from water softener.

What is not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty?

  1. Misuse, abuse or any repair or alteration performed by anyone other than authorized representatives of McGrew Wastewater.
  2. Use of components other than authorized McGrew Wastewater components parts.
  3. Non-Sewage water flows caused by infiltration, storm water connections, leakage from improperly maintained plumbing fixtures, water softeners, etc.
  4. Failure to maintain electrical power to the treatment system in accordance with the requirements of the certified manufacturer or the authorized service representative.
  5. The disposal into the Aerobic Treatment Unit of any non-biodegradable materials (i.e. plastic and rubber products, coffee grounds, chemicals, solvents, grease, oil, paints, or any other type of non-domestic wastewater).
  6. Short term of daily sewage flows to the Aerobic Treatment Unit that exceeds the system’s hydraulic organic design capabilities.
  7. Any usage contrary to the Aerobic Treatment Unit owner’s manual and/or beyond the recommendations of the certified manufacturer (Acquired Wastewater Technologies.)

What services should be preformed during maintenance calls?

  1. Check the control panel and all electrical connections. Make sure they are secure and free of dirt and debris that would not permit proper operation.
  2. Check the high water alarm system for the same. Make sure the alarm has not activated.
  3. Check the aerator for proper operation. Make sure pest (ants or any bugs) have not started to collect around the aerator. Check the aerator platform. Make sure it is clean and level.
  4. Check for strong odors and colored effluent (water draining from the unit).
  5. Check the diffuser and the water body inside the aeration chamber. Make sure the air is properly being diffused into the water. The water color in the aeration chamber should be a chocolate brown color.
  6. Make sure the water at the top of the clarifier is clear in color without scum floating at the top.

What should the homeowner know upon installation?

  • Do not – put non biodegradable materials into the system.
  • Do not – put excessive grease or cooking oil into the system.
  • Do not – put solvents, paints, drain cleaner, or other toxic materials into the system
  • Do not – allow surface water to pond around the unit
  • Do not – allow non – sewage water to enter the unit.
  • Do not – allow the backwash from a water softener to enter the unit.
  • Do not – allow infiltration of rainwater into the unit.
  • Do not – allow anyone to service or maintain the system unless they are certified to do so.

Is there anything that needs to be added to the ATU to keep it performing correctly?

Do Not add any products used for septic tanks, if you think something is needed, we have a product named BluGuard which is geared for the Aerobic Treatment Unit.

Who do I call if we have a problem and don’t know who installed the ATU?

Call McGrew Wastewater.  Please note the serial number of the aerator before you call.
