An open discussion on the Common Core State Initiative and standardized testing is being held Sept. 23, 2014.

Some of the topics that will be focused on are how tests, tests and more tests are not for student equity; how "We the People" were left out of due process; how Common Core Standards were passed first, then written; how Common Core is stressful, harmful and damages self-esteem; how Common Core is supposedly about higher standards, but the truth is we already have standards higher than what Common Core is advancing.

Featured speakers are Louisiana Power Coalition President Diane Long, "We the People" activist Brenda O'Brock, lobbyist Sandy McDade, State Representative Henry Burns, retired professor Jim Simmons, Caddo School Board member Curtis Hooks, interventionist and educator Gay Greer, and mom and RN Supervisor Christine Ytzen.

Diane Long says everyone, both for and against Common Core, is welcome to attend. There's a Meet & Greet before the meeting. That starts at 5:30 p.m. The forum itself starts at 6 p.m. at the We the People/Louisiana Power Coalition headquarters at 1258 Dalzell in Shreveport.
