Continuing with its spring tradition, Centenary College students, faculty and staff will gather Saturday, March 21, for BIG Event 8.

The student-led day of service allows Centenary to connect with its Highland-area neighbors and give back to the community. Assistant Director for Community Engagement LaToya Hemphill tells KEEL News the group won't let any rain we might get that day stop them, either.

"I've got some contingency plans in place. I've conferred with some others that know a lot more about having to do some things within the possible conditions that we may have, and they say that we should still be good to go," Hemphill said. "So based upon that, I've got to plan either way. We've got too much going on that a few drops of rain will not stop this ship."

One group of volunteers at the MLK Health Center will undertake a day-long painting and planting project at the center's Community Garden. Others will work at Community Renewal International's Yellow House and at Common Ground.

Hemphill says there are more than 45 work sites for Saturday's service day. And there is a variety of projects volunteers will be tackling at each one.

"We've got some tree-planting, we've got some painting, some priming of some projects that the homeowners will be taking care of later on," Hemphill said. "We're going to be making some stepping stones, we're going to be helping out some elderly, disabled individuals at some of their homes. We're going to be pulling some weeds, we're going to be breaking up some things that need to be taken away and hauled off."

Check-in and breakfast for volunteers begins at 7:30 a.m. in Kilpatrick Auditorium, and projects will begin at various locations at 8:30 a.m. Following the completion of volunteer projects at noon, participants are invited to the BIG Event Carnival at Centenary’s Jones Rice Field.
