March is National Women’s History Month and the Shreveport Mayor’s Women’s Commission is hosting several events this week in recognition of it.

Guest speaker Maxine Sarpy kicked off the week with a breakfast to honor local women who have made historical contributions to Shreveport. Sarpy, who is expected to be a candidate for Mayor of Shreveport is the first woman to serve on the Shreveport City Council.
The Women’s Commission will follow up the breakfast with many more events including the 3rd Annual Cora M. Allen Lunch and Fashion Show Thursday, March 6. Also taking place at the Shreveport Convention Center, this fun event kicks off at 11:30 and features Melissa Flournoy, director of the RAND Gulf States Policy Institute and a former state legislator, as the keynote luncheon speaker.
The week also includes the following:
• Tuesday, March 4th the YWCA of Northwest Louisiana hosts a luncheon at the Shreveport Petroleum Club from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Noted local attorney Allison Jones will deliver the keynote address. This will feature details about the "New Beginning" for the local YWCA.
• Also on Tuesday, Amerigroup Louisiana and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will sponsor a wellness seminar for women at Ernest’s Orleans Restaurant at 6 p.m.
• Wednesday, March 5th Bank On Shreveport and the HUB Urban Ministries is sponsoring a two-hour session on financial planning. This will be held at 605 Cotton St. from 10 a.m. to noon.
• Also on Wednesday, the YWCA, and Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office will sponsor a Legal Education workshop at noon at the Shreveport Bar Association’s downtown office, 625 Texas Ave.
