"It is the end of an era for Captain Shreve High School." That's the word from Caddo Parish Schools after Captain Shreve High School Principal Sandra McCalla announces she is retiring.

Dr. McCalla has been in education for 55 years -- 49 in Caddo Schools and six at Northwestern State University. She announced her retirement to her leadership staff and Superintendent Lamar Goree this week. She began as a math tecaher at Shreve when it opened in 1967, and has served as principal since 1979.

"I can't say for certain there was ever a moment where I would say for certain it's the right time, but I feel good leaving it in the great shape it is today," McCalla said in a news release. "It is fully staffed with great people and a student body of which there couldn't be a greater group of individuals. Captain Shreve is a strong, academically-solid school and I am proud of the work we have done together."

McCalla will continue to serve as principal until her successor is chosen. The school district officially posted the position today to begin accepting resumes. McCalla anticipates a decision will be made by the end of July, but she's prepared to serve until a selection is made.

"To say Dr. McCalla is a legend in Caddo Schools is only scratching the surface," said Dr. Goree. "For our district, she is an institution unto her own - teaching the best of character, perserverance and integrity at every turn. We will miss her daily presence in The Swamp, but know she will always be the biggest of Gator supporters."
