Shelby Paine, a junior at Captain Shreve High School, won first place in the Oratory Contest at the Southern Association of Student Councils (SASC) Conference in Orlando, FL.

Shelby competed against contestants from fifteen states. Her speech, one which she wrote and delivered, was entitled, "Be the Change" -- an inspirational message that challenged the audience to make small changes in their lives that would trigger changes in others.

The SASC Conference is an annual event in which student councils from fifteen Southern states convene for leadership training and practical experience in democratic principles.  Captain Shreve High School attends SASC sponsored events each year.

Martha Goza, Captain Shreve Student Council sponsor, is a member of the National Association of Student Councils Advisory Board.
