In the wake of the recent DSNAP flood benefits controversy two Saturdays ago, Representative Mike Johnson of Bossier City has introduced legislation to prevent a repeat what some are calling massive fraud.

As the controversy grows regarding the lack of vetting of recipients, Johnson has introduced House Bill 987, the State Government Integrity Act. The point, according to Johnson is to prohibit false or fraudulent claims for obtaining funds or property from the state government.

The bill authorizes civil action by the Louisiana Attorney General or by private citizens who spot fraud and are to assist the state in recovering those assets. In addition, the bill allows whistleblower protection.

Spokespeople for the state's DCFS have said that in distributing DSNAP benefits, they were adhering to strict federal guidelines, and point out there is already a mechanism for whistle blowers and others to report SNAP and DSNAP fraud, as well as to prosecute and recover fraudulent benefits.
