A fire this afternoon in the 1300 block of Shamrock Drive leaves one man injured and the duplex heavily damaged.

When firefighters arrived, they reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the duplex. They also found the man who lives there standing outside. He'd suffered burns to his hands and face. He said he was inside, asleep on the couch, when he was awaked by a smoke alarm. He was burned while attempting to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher. He was taken to University Health for treatment.

Firefighters had to evacuate from portions of the duplex because of the intensity of the fire, which had spread into the attic and burned through a section of the roof. The heat also melted parts of vinyl siding on a house and garage next door to the duplex.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control. The exact cause is still under investigation.
