BESE Endorses New Common Core Standards
After a heated debate, BESE endorsed revisions to the Common Core Academic Standards. The largest percentages of changes are focused on math standards for students in grades 3 through 12.
Leaders say this is a big win and will allow teachers more freedom and for lessons to be more age appropriate. The measure was passed by BESE with only 1 dissenting vote. Governor John Bel Edwards, a known common core critic, has the authority to endorse or veto the changes and has said in the past that the revisions needed to be substantial.
