HOUSTON (AP) — A U.S. Army spokeswoman says Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who had been a prisoner of war in Afghanistan for five years, is being allowed to venture off the Texas military base where he is receiving care as part of his "reintegration process" into society.

The 28-year-old Bergdahl has been receiving care at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio since returning to the United States last month.

Army spokeswoman Arwen Consaul said Wednesday that Bergdahl has been allowed to go while supervised to a grocery store, restaurants, shopping centers and a library as part of the process of getting him comfortable with being out in public.

The Idaho native was freed by the Taliban May 31 in a deal struck by the Obama administration in which five senior Taliban officials were released.
