The housing market in South Louisiana is getting quite a shakeup with the recent floods. The storms have forced more than 50,000 families from their homes.

Most hope to rebuild, but others will look for new homes. This is expected to cause quite a demand on the already strained Baton Rouge housing market.

As of July, the Greater Baton Rouge Association of Realtors' Multiple Listing Service found there were 3,382 homes on the market in the metro areas. That number will drop quickly as those homes get snapped up.

In the immediate aftermath of the flooding, Ginger Maulden, president-elect of the Baton Rouge realtor's group, tells The Advocate she expects the inventory will drop even further. Maulden says some people who had listed their property may end up taking it off the market and letting displaced family or friends live there. She says some homes that were listed may have been damaged by floodwaters and can't be sold.

Ironically, my brothers and I just put my Mother's home on the market in Baton Rouge, but we did get about 2" of water in the home. Once we redo the floors, we'll have the home back on the market. Our agent tells us we should have no trouble selling the home.
