Ten people were killed when a bus carrying 12 prisoners and three corrections officers skidded off an icy interstate in Texas.

At least 10 people were killed when the bus slid down an embankment and collided with a passing train. 8 prisoners and 2 guards have died in the crash. The overpass on Interstate 20 was slick with ice when the tragedy happened. The bus left the roadway just west of Odessa, according to Ector County Sheriff Mark Donaldson.

He said five injured people were taken to a hospital. A spokeswoman for Medical Center Hospital in Odessa did not have information on the severity of those injuries.

In a statement, Brad Livingston, Executive Director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said:

It’s with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of those killed and injured this morning in a tragic accident. Their loved ones will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Justice department spokesman Jason Clark said the bus was carrying 12 prisoners and three corrections officers, and was taking the inmates from a prison in Abilene to another in El Paso.
